Title:

Aircrew Breathing Systems (ACBS)
Scope:
This standard establishes requirements for an Aircrew Breathing System (ACBS), incorporating physiological parameters as design criteria for an ACBS used in military aircraft designed for sustained operations below 50,000 ft. In the event that there are requirements not addressed in this standard (such as flight above 50,000 ft.), they should be addressed with the Aircraft Program Office and aerospace physiology experts. The human requirements defined herein should be met by all ACBSs which deliver breathing gas to the masks of aircrew in order to protect them against impaired performance due to adverse physiological states such as hypoxia, hyperoxia, hypercapnia, and hypocapnia. This standard should not presume the aforementioned to be all inclusive. The design criteria should mitigate contamination risk for the crew compartment atmosphere by toxic materials (and should be compatible with equipment or systems used to protect aircrew from chemical warfare agents). ACBSs designs should meet the physiologic standards herein. Integration, certification, and sustainment/maintenance are also addressed. This standard should be cited in acquisition contracts. This standard applies to the acquisition of all systems related to ACBS including, but not limited to new programs, upgrades, and subsystem/component changes. Department of Defense Manual (DoDM) 4120.24, Defense Standardization Program (DSP) Procedures, may be used as a guide for tailoring of standardization documents. This standard should be applied in conjunction with other relevant standardization documents. In the event that there are requirements not addressed in this standard they should be addressed with the Aircraft Program Office. The program office should consult the relevant U.S. Government subject matter experts (SMEs) to include Engineering, Aeromedical, Life Support, Aircrew Flight Equipment, Crew Systems, and Human Systems Integration. Appendix A is a repository of physiological reference information...
